Angkor
The majestic temples of Angkor in northwest Cambodia belong to the classic period of Khmer art and civili-zation.Today,a millennium after the y were built, they awe visitors with their perfection and enormity.
The temples are the creation of a suc-cession of Khmer kings who presided over and empire that dominated the re-gion for 800 to 1430,reaching its peak in the 12th century. the period began with the ascension to the throne by king Jayavarman II.
From the 15th century, the temples were abandoned, forgotten by the world until their rediscovery in1861 by French naturalist Henri Mouhot. the jungle setting and silence en-hance the mystery of the temples. One early discoverer’s reaction upon seeing Angkor Wat more the 130 years ago many not be so different from what travelers can experience today: “the temple stands solitary and alone in the jungle,in too perfect order to be called a ruin, a relie of a race far ahead of the present,” explorer D.O.king wrote in 1860,in his “Travel in Siam and Cambodia.”
Many of the temples remain in surprisingly good condition. Others are un-der restoration ,and visitors can get a first hand look at the painstaking ef-forts underway to preserve the relics. Architectural historians from a variety of countries including France, India, Japan, the USA,Indonesia,and Hungary in the past few year have contributed their expertise to preserve the temples.
The ruins cover an area of 400 square kilometers in the province of Siemreap. The area contains more than 100 monuments, including two dozen major temples. Some of the temples, such as Angkor wat and Bayon, merit repeat visits at different times of day, as the reflections on their walls and labyrinthine interior spaces are transformed by the light.
Most of the temples are located a few kilometer from downtown siemreap.siemreap is soon to experience a boom of new hotels, which will give it the infrastructure it needs to sup-port the increasing numbers of tour-ists who want to visit.
Angkor Wat Temple
Angkor Wat is the largest temple in the world, with a volume of stone equal-ing that of the cheops pyramid in Egypt. It is unlike all the other Khmer temples in that it faces west, and it is inspired by 12th century Hinduism. Its symmetrical towers are stylized on the Cambodian flag.
Conceived by Suryavarman II, Angkor Wat took and estimated 30 Years to build. It is generally believed to gave been a funeral temple for the king. It has been occupied continuously by Buddhist monks and is well preserved. intricate bas relief’s surround Angkor Wat on four sides. each tells a story. The most celebrated of these is the Churning of the Ocean of Milk, Which is located on the east wing. In it the naga, or Serpent, is twisted by de-mons and gods to spurt out the elixir of life.the way the light glows on the ancient stones makes sunrise and sunset the best time to wander through Angkor Wat’s two square kilometers, climb its towers and pon-der its creators.
